The Excellence of His Majesty

A. In Ps. 8:1, David proclaims, “O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the
earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!” In the works of His creation,
God has manifested the perfection of His goodness and wisdom and power. He has set His
glory above the heavens. God’s greatness is so vast that it stretches our imagination to its limit.
1. But the evidence is still all around us, and we need to open ourselves up more fully to an appreciation of His glory. We must make sure that the grandeur of all these things is not lost on us. What could be a greater tragedy than to be surrounded by God’s glory and fail to be moved by it appreciatively?
a. Consider an analogy. I recently listened to a Wagner stringed concerto. It’s hard to
imagine that anyone could listen to this music and not be moved by its exhilarating power.
But there are such people.
(A) They can sit and listen to this symphony and fail to be moved by it because they
are not really paying attention. Maybe they’re preoccupied with their expensive
new shoes, which are a tad too tight. Wouldn’t that be a sad situation?
(1) While they’re fretting over the relatively unimportant concerns of their own little
world, and they missed the opportunity to be transformed by something much
bigger than they are.
(1) A huge experience surrounded them. But they missed it because their attention was focused on themselves.
(2) In our case, we’re surrounded by the very works of God. The majesty of
creative genius. If that doesn’t affect us, then nothing will.
(2) “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!” Is the stupendous glory of His creation lost on us? Do we not have eyes to see? Are we not paying attention?
(1) If not, we need to rise above the little worries of our lives. For we must allow ourselves to be moved by the majesty of our God.
(2) Acts 20:32.
